Robert Paul is an artist and graphic designer working in Townsville. Prior to commencing freelance design work, Robert worked in Bowen as a meat processor. When the factory was closed, he decided to pursue a design and arts career. Having painted murals in Bowen, Robert relocated to Townsville where he attended James Cook University and studied a Bachelor of Communication and Design. During his studies he started using computers and “found that it would benefit me and my family to take that direction, using my art as a way of earning a living”. Over the last two years, Robert became interested in interactive multimedia and is currently working on an interactive cd-rom aimed at preserving the Indigenous language and culture of north Queensland Aboriginal people. The content of the cd-rom explores language, family, food, environment and general information about the clans of this area. Robert is particularly interested in streamlining production processes and animation work for the cd-rom. Since graduating from university 12 months ago, Robert, with the support of his wife, Odette, has been operating a design business and hopes that his business will be up and running as a going concern in the near future. “Without the support of my wife and family, I would have followed through on all this,” he said.
